June Goals

Friday, May 30, 2014

Man oh man. I need June in my life. For us, June is vacation month. I couldn't possibly be more excited to head across the pond with my sweet husband this month. Our trip will be downright incredible.. but that's not even it. I just plain need a vacation, a change of scenery. I'm in one of those times when even things I love take an extra push, just a little break would do amazing wonders- so two and a half weeks will leave me feeling like it's a whole new year! I'm giddy about June, and our trip, a good portion of each day. I can't believe it will be here in just a week!

May Goals
Read the scriptures daily; Chronological Reading plan on my Bible App!  EVERYONE NEEDS TO USE THEIR BIBLE APP! LOVE!
Complete a Mini Contentment Challenge with Meredith
Finish booking things and planning for our Europe trip NEXT MONTH!
Celebrate the wedding weekend of two dear friends (this weekend!!)
Have the guest room ready for a guest (it was ready, it wasn't great... haha!)
Finish reading Boundaries and start reading The Nesting Place
host a baby shower for my sister in law
Consistently declare Monday to be "household day" and complete laundry, cleaning, changing of sheets, etc. This has been a laundry GAME CHANGER!

This month's goals are quite simple... I'll be especially focused on the second one. :)

June Goals
Pack our things for Europe in a semi-organized fashion
Enjoy every minute of England and France with Benjamin Luke
figure out what year Strader Farm was "founded" by going to the county court house
Get rid of all the clothes I've cleaned out of my closet

What do y'all have planned for June? And just in Summer? :)

Kayce's Baby Shower

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

Hi there! I accidentally took a brief hiatus. Whoops. I'm glad to be back. :)

At the beginning of the month, I hosted a baby shower for my sister in law. It was a delightful morning, but as often happens with delightful mornings... I didn't take as many photos as planned. We got a ton of really happy images of Kayce with various family members though, so I'm glad about that!

Let's start with invitations! I worked with Kelly of Winifred Paper. She really captured the clean, sweet look that I was wanting.

Here's my best attempt at capturing the invitation without revealing my address to the world.

My favorite part, by far.. was the envelope! the detailing was just so precious!

The shower was a "family shower" which for us, filled the room. This also meant that it was a group effort on all of the food. I'm so thankful for that. We had chicken salad croissants, pimento cheese, spinach and strawberry salad, soup, and lots of other little snack foods.

The photo above was taken before anyone had really gotten there (bringing their food along with them. The gray polka dot table cloth was a perfect find and is from Pottery Barn (on sale!) and the stuffed lamb that took up residence on a cake plate is from PB kids. I chose to do simple florals, tulips and baby's breath.. because there was so much else going on!

The cake came from the same bakery that made our wedding cakes (Legacy Cakes in Grapevine, Texas) and I was really pleased. They really captured the invitation, I thought! The font of the letters isn't necessarily what I would have chosen.. but it worked well and I was so happy with the cake. It was a "cinnamon roll" flavored cake with cream cheese icing aka heaven on earth. We also had the best cake balls ever from the same bakery. Red Velvet were the best. :)

I was really excited about the "little lamb" theme and it lead to one of Ben's aunts finding tons of goodies like these! One of my favorite little moments of the shower was when Ben's cousin's daughter (age 2) picked up the chocolates and declared "Abby's!!!" claiming them for her own!!

I borrowed my mother in law's drink dispensers and put them on our cheese board for some height. Of course we drank out of mason jars with gray and white striped straws. ;) In one jug is just normal store bought lemonade (with lemon slices to make it look fancy) and water with blackberries for some color!

Once everyone arrived with all of their goodies, there was so much food that I had to move all the desserts to the living room on a whim! Yikes! Haha. I'm glad that process went rather smoothly (surprisingly!) and it turned out great that everyone could eat the sweets while Kayce opened presents.

Speaking of presents... lots of people really jumped on the theme and purchased lamb themed gifts!

Here's Kayce with the table (and all the random things I had to move off of the table quickly ;) )

And here's us together! The baby's gender is a secret.. and I've intentionally worn pink to both baby showers so far to make my guess subtly known. :) The last shower is on Saturday so I guess I need to plan my third pink outfit now!

Have ya'll thrown any parties recently?

May Contentment Challenge with Meredith!

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Peace out, B&B Works!

My life needs more contentment, and more joy. Period.

A few weeks ago I was feeling bogged down by the sinful desires of my heart and texted my room mate from MTH/Bestie Meredith and suggested that we do Nancy Ray's Contentment Challenge.

If you haven't already followed the link above, I highly recommend reading all of Nancy's posts.

Summary: 3 months, no shopping, no miscellaneous random spending, focusing on scripture and a heart of contentment.

I had the pull to start this about mid April.. and with our Europe trip in June, we decided to start with a one month fast.

Now to some, this may seem ridiculous that I would have to apply this discipline in my life because you already don't shop. To others, the idea of giving up shopping for a month may seem pointless. Let me say this, I felt the Lord pulling on me to do it, so I am. I'm hopeful that He will use it in my life, and at the very least, I'll be learning a little bit of discipline.

One quote from Nancy that I really connected with:

All in all, I wasn’t content in my life. Even though I had a happy marriage, a wonderful home, a business I love, money in the bank, my health, a wonderful church... even though I had (and still have) "it all," there was this nagging, awful feeling inside me that said, “Nancy, you need this ________. You won’t be complete if you don’t have this __________.”  (You can fill that blank with just about anything.)

I think this scripture really describes my heart behind this....

“And He said to them, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance, does his life consist of his possessions.’” Luke 12:15

At the end of the day, I don't really know what to share about this. Yet. Right now I'm just aware of my greedy heart, my home filled with excess, and my desire to be a strong woman of God.

Will I buy gifts for others? YES. If Ben needs something will I go get it for him? YES. This is about halting my heart for materialism.. not keeping me from celebrating others or taking care of my husband.

And, since we're 7 days in.. I already have a story. I had noticed a friend from this past weekend's wedding wearing a gorgeous lip color so I found out what it was and wrote it down (lip products make me feel like a real woman haha) so last night while buying a gift at Target I wanted to go look at it. Every single product on the shelf was stocked.. except for the one that I wanted to look at. I'm going to take that as a sign from the Lord. That may seem silly to some... but I am going to take that as encouragement to DO this.

Have you ever done the Contentment Challenge or something similar? Any words of wisdom for Meredith and I? It's not too late to join in if you're feeling like you might need a month of detox!

A Happy Weekend

Monday, May 5, 2014

I cannot get enough of social media this time of year. I know that's super contradictory to posts like this... but everywhere I look I see celebration.

My friend Kassidy, who is about to graduate from Texas A&M, put it well...

"My newsfeed tonight= Engagements (4), Wedding showers (2), Baby gender reveals (2), Prom pictures (6), and graduation parties (3). SOOO MUCHHHH JOYYYY celebrating these many different milestones. It's not going to be easy saying goodbye to these incredible four years, but I know that every single moment has been lived to the fullest and I've learned something each and every day. Congrats to all of you fabulous people for whatever amazing things are happening in your life right now, seriously. Praise is befitting to a good God who lavishes us with gifts from above."

Yes. Love that. For me, this weekend meant celebrating the wedding of some dear friends.

Here's an iPhone photo of the beautiful bride. She was poised and classy and perfect. It was so fun seeing how giddy she was to marry her groom.

The wedding marked a semi-big milestone for us, too! I posted about this on instagram, but Ben and I have never really been dancers. We didn't have a first dance or any dancing at our wedding. We always skipped sorority events in college. Ben has always just not been a fan of public dancing and felt weird about it. I've been totally fine with that, but recently I had been wanting for us to give it a try. My sweet man was brave and kind to go ahead and go for it at the wedding this weekend. We had so much stinking fun! He said he liked the slow dancing the best because it's "basically just talking" :) but it really did make the whole event so much fun. I'm so thankful for how he tried something different to make me happy.. and I think we're now total dancing converts. :)

This weekend was also Jack and Louisa's prom! Do you remember when he asked her to prom

Let me first say that I'm obsessed with this couple. I thought Jack wanting to use my blog as a part of their story was the best thing that's ever happened.. and following them on social media and seeing them really be joyful about their life in the Lord has been a blessing. They are totally precious!

Jack was so sweet to send me a few photos from the weekend!

Aren't they the cutest?!?!?! Did y'all have anything fun going on this weekend? :)

May Goals

Y'all. Spring has brought new life into my... life. :)
I've never really been Spring's biggest fan. I just love Fall too much to give any other season my attention! Haha! But this year, the pastels, the new life, the cool breezes and nice sunshine... I've been all over it. I'm thankful for the sweet new season. For so long, my life was defined by semesters and school.. but now I'm starting to truly cherish the seasons that the Lord created for us naturally. There is so much about a slight change of season that keeps me feeling joyful. And May is always the beginning of such a sweet time, it always brings celebration. Graduations, upcoming marriages, etc. I love it!
