Ben's First Father's Day

Monday, June 27, 2016

The last two Father's Days we've been out of the country. In 2014 we were in London, and in 2015 we were in Naples. So to be honest with you, I don't even know what our family usually does to celebrate! Yikes! This year was different again though. Ben's older brother and his wife, and our niece, moved into their new house! So it was a family moving day. That morning we skipped church after Beau had a rough night of sleep. Our precious boy usually does really great, but had a hard time getting to sleep for his first long stretch.

So we slept in, ate some breakfast, took some photos, and then joined the family for lunch and moving day! After the bulk of the moving was done, Ben and his brothers played basketball, and Ben's mom stayed with Beau while I did a Target run to take advantage of a sale they were having on baby gear. Keep your eyes peeled for when they do a "Spend $100, get a $25 gift card".. so I stocked up! Not a super traditional day of celebration.. but it was with family and super sweet. Our gift for Ben's dad was taking him to a Rangers game! Our thought was that it would be sweet for him to take Beau to his first baseball game, and then we realized it would be the same thing for our niece, and that we should all go! My only hesitation was the heat. Amanda (our friend who is basically family!) goes to the Rangers a lot so she pointed out that they sometimes sell tickets to the public for one of the larger suites. That's what we bought tickets for, and it ended up being amazing!

For getting in and out of the game, I wore Beau in my Solly Baby Wrap. I had read a lot of people talking about loving these before I had Beau so I really wanted one. I LOVE it! It's great for around the house and the game was my first time wearing it out in public. Couldn't have been better for the game. Under Beau's head got a little sweaty going into the game but when we left he was fast asleep and very comfortable. I felt like the coolest person ever.

Such a real life photo... I shouldn't have decided that the best time for Beau to take a picture with his Pops was when he was ready for dinner.. haha!

Further evidence of me feeling like the coolest person ever with the baby wrap.. taking a selfie in public. :) Beau did so well being worn and it was really encouraging to me! I think he'll do great in the wrap on our trip.

The best part of all family gatherings is time with our sweet niece. She loves Beau so much and we love her so much!!

This photo isn't great quality at all, but it shows the view from the box.. so awesome!

As a rule of thumb, we tend to shy away from activities or shows or festivals that most people flock to. I know that seems silly, but we just often end up doing the same thing. This night was such an amazingly fun change of pace for us and we really enjoyed it. I will never be able to attend a sporting event again in lesser conditions, this was my kind of weather controlled event! :)

What did y'all do to celebrate Father's Day?

No. 1

As we anticipate our trip to Italy, Switzerland, & England next month.. I've been soaking up posts by mamas who travel with their babies. One of my favorites, Barefoot Blonde, just took her family to Lake Como and Milan, the two Italian places we'll be visiting next month. I loved seeing her photos!

Baby Hats. Heart Eyes Emoji!!!

No. 3

On Wednesday we had a follow up for Beau at the heart doctor. He had a heart echo & did so awesome! Everything came back looking great and we are so grateful. The nurses commented on how well behaved Beau was and I was the proudest mama. Look how sweet his little face was while getting the echo!

Okay so bear with me on how quirky this is.. when we had the fetal heart echo the week before Beau was born we were emotionally drained and terrified by the time we showed up for the procedure. While we waited in the consultation room, we noticed that the entire office is 100% out of the 90s. The bulletin boards had photos that couldn't have been updated in years. We saw the photo below and died laughing and it really broke the tension for us. I knew I had to snap a photo of it when we returned. It was less hilarious than I remembered, but still could have probably earned a spot on awkward family photos.

After his appointment, we took advantage of being in Dallas and went to Northpark mall. I returned something to Nordstrom and we met up with my college room mate, Courtney! We love her so much and anytime we get to see her is such a treat.

A few people have asked... and we are LOVING our UppaBaby Mesa carseat and Vista stroller. It was $$$$$$ but has been PHENOMENAL so far. We got it for some logistical things for our big trip to Europe next month, and thus far we have no regrets!

I'm such a sucker for personalized items.. and fell in LOVE with this for fall! My sweet boy will look so handsome in this! (From Smockingbird Kids)

No. 5

I recently picked up this lip product. I don't really do high maintenance lip things.. but this is more of a tinted chapstick that I've officially fallen in love with. The color (petal) is perfect, too! I think it will be great for all seasons. It smells wonderful, too! I would highly recommend it- I'll note I got the recommendation from my favorite style blogger, Julia Engel of Gal Meets Glam!

Beau's First Haircut

Thursday, June 23, 2016

The absolute first thing we noticed about Beau when he was born was his hair. He's got a full head of thick hair that appears highlighted, and it was naturally in the shape of a little comb over. Friends of ours have joked that I couldn't have asked for a preppier baby. We've had the same conversation about his hair over and over and over haha!

At 14 days old when Beau got to come home from the NICU, we were surprised to see that he was already due for a haircut. Originally I wanted to just trim his unruly sideburns, but the back of his neck needed it too. How is that even possible?

This photo, from the day Beau came home, really shows how out of control one side of his hair was! Luckily my friend Rachel cuts my hair, and when her and her husband came to visit us in the hospital she mentioned that she would be able to cut it! I was so grateful that I didn't have to try and trim it myself or take him somewhere... Rachel just came over and gave him a trim right at the kitchen table!

I was prepared for baby boy to scream his head off, but he just kind of hung out while Ben held him and Rachel did her thing!

I saved some of the hair in a little baggie.. I couldn't help myself!

And there you have it! We were left with a much snazzier look for our precious boy! It was perfect timing because he had his newborn photos the next day. Annnndd a few weeks later we're due for another trim! Such a unique thing to worry about for a newborn!

Favorites of Spring

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Now that summer is officially underway.. it's time to reflect on my favorites from the Spring months. Looking back, I feel that this Spring passed faster than any other season. The celebration and anticipation of Beau's arrival made the days pass so quickly. I had expected for the time to drag on, but when the time came, it felt so all of a sudden!

So clearly y'all already know the answer to the first category...

My Favorite Personal Moment:

Meeting our son, sweet Beau bear! And closely followed by..

Bringing Beau home from the hospital after a long, emotionally trying few weeks.

Favorite Book: I honestly didn't read any books worth mentioning during this season, sad I know! I'm currently working on a great one though, which I'll share soon!

Favorite Opportunity: Taking maternity photos with the amazing Dyan Kethley! Doing this is even sweeter to me now that Beau is actually here.

Favorite Travel Moment: We stayed put this Spring.. but the excitement over our upcoming trip is growing each day! Stay tuned for #BeauBearTravelsTheWorld ;) Butttt... right at the beginning of the season I did a quick trip to Waco with my best friends for the full Magnolia experience. That was a blast and I got tons of interior inspiration for an upcoming project- can't wait to share more soon!

Favorite Treat: Every girl deserves a trip to dry bar for a blowout once or twice! I've gone twice, for our gender reveal and maternity photos.. and am so glad I did! Having it done for the party was the best because I felt great for hosting, and also feel polished in all of the photos! For reference, I've had the "Southern Comfort" and the "Cosmo Thai" blowouts.

Favorite Photo: The image we used for my sweet boy's birth announcement! The rest of his newborn photos are here.

Favorite Skincare Product: The day of my maternity photos, I had to run into Sephora to get a new mascara.. and I was eligible to get a deluxe sample of all the First Aid Beauty products. It ended up being perfect because I used the facial radiance pads followed by the ultra repair cream (daily moisturizer) to get my dull skin perked up when I was doing my makeup in the car before the photos. This HOOKED me on these two products because my makeup went on so great. They're pricey, but even Ben now uses the moisturizer and says its the best! Haha!

What were your favorites this Spring? :)

Beau's Nursery

Monday, June 20, 2016

The day to share Beau's sweet nursery is finally here! I truly loved creating this space. I think it's a great representation of our style. We've already made some incredibly sweet memories in this room with Beau. Each night when Beau has his bedtime feeding we snuggle in the chair as a family and read a story from his Jesus Storybook Bible. I purchased that bible in college, dreaming of my future babies, and being a crazy person that was worried this precious bible would go out of print before my children were born. :) Beau already sleeps wonderfully in his room and it thrills my soul. I can't wait for this space to be a sweet safe place for him as he grows!

Friday No. 36

Friday, June 17, 2016

It's been awhile since my last Friday post.. life with Beau has kept me from them, and I'm excited to get back in the groove of things!

No. 1

Speaking of time flying.. I feel like my perception of time is WAY off lately. Beau is growing like a weed which is so bittersweet. The photo above REALLY showed how much he has changed since he was born. I could almost start to imagine what he's going to look like as a little boy. The resemblance between Beau and Ben is absolutely crazy at times. I cannot believe we have a 5 week old but it also feels like I've never not known Beau.

No. 2

I'm such a sucker for a good organization project. When we redid our bathroom about a year and a half ago, I just plain forgot to ask about getting a shelf for shampoo and whatnot built in. I realized it as soon as the tile was done and it was too late, sigh. Silly, I know. I won't make that mistake twice. :) But anyway, our shower head is up pretty high and won't work with most shower caddies. I found this one at the Container Store finally, after trying so many! The shape, combined with the really great quality OXO gripping system made this the perfect fit for our shower. I can't tell you how luxurious it feels to have this problem taken care of, and no bottles collecting grime on the corners of our tub. YAY! There is no greater feeling than solving an organizational problem.

No. 3

Postpartum life has lead to a lot of window shopping for me.. I've fallen in LOVE with this dress, this dress, & this dress!

No. 4

My sweet, snuggly boy! At five weeks old he's honestly almost due for another haircut. It's so crazy! Is he going to need a monthly trim his whole life? Ben and some of our friends suggested we let it grow and do something silly with it like a man bun or a mullet and go viral on the internet but mama is NOT feeling that. :)

No. 5

This week, Ben and I left Beau for the first time since he has been home from the hospital. He was perfectly fine with his Granny and Pops.. but it was so hard leaving. I just kept thinking "people don't even know we have a baby!!" which is so silly! :) We just went and got shakes at Chick Fil A, which actually lead to me deciding I should probably not eat any kind of ice cream anymore.. it just always hurts my tummy! So we'll see how that goes!

My Go-To Recipes: Snickerdoodle Bundt Cake

Thursday, June 16, 2016

(originally found here.)

1 box of white cake mix
2 small instant vanilla puddings
1/2 cup veggie oil
1 1/4 cups water
4 eggs
4 tablespoons cinnamon (divided)
2/3 cup butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
3-4 tablespoons milk
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a 10 inch bundt pan.
In mixing bowl, combine cake mix, puddings, oil, water, eggs, and 2 tablespoons cinnamon with electric mixer.  Pour into prepared bundt pan.
Bake 40-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Let cake rest on counter in pan 10 minutes (if not a little bit longer).  Then, invert cake onto serving plate to finish cooling.

In a medium sized bowl,  mix powdered sugar and milk until it's a glaze like consistency. Then add in the desired amount of cinnamon. (this glaze is Ben's favorite part.. I always save extra in a tupperware for him to add to pieces that he doesn't think got an adequate amount, haha!) Drizzle the glaze over your bundt cake and it will make it look perfect!

Beau & Mama's First Month Favorites

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

I did SO much research while registering and it's been so fun to actually see what products have been a perfect fit for our little family. Thus far, we've been really happy with what we've ended up with, and I'm so excited to share as I continue figuring it out. For me, when I knew that a blog I trusted recommended something, I immediately added it to our registry. Our go to mama for this was/is the amazing Sarah Tucker! I truly hope that my findings as a first time mom can help anyone who may be in this place in the future, or even be interesting to someone who isn't a parent. There are many more things we've loved.. and I'll share more as necessary! :)

First Month Favorites:

Mamaroo: I had heard that some babies really don't like the Mamaroo, but Beau LOVES his. One morning when we arrived back at the NICU, one of our favorite nurses had put a Mamaroo in Beau's area and he was already loving it! It was so nice to have something consistent for him when he got home and he still loves it. We often let him nap in it without it even on (silly, I know) but if he's extra fussy or needs to be occupied while I do something he loves it during the day.

Aden and Anais Blankets: We don't actually swaddle with these, but I love them for when Beau is riding in the carseat or sitting in the mamaroo, they also work well as a carseat cover and tummy time on the go! A few times I've even used them to cover my whole body when feeding Beau a bottle in the back of the car to prevent spills on my clothes. LOVE them!

Aden and Anais Burpy Bib (two pack, here): I had no intention of getting hooked on $10 burp cloths. We have a ton of cheap ones and while they get the job done, I kept reaching for the one burpy bib we had been gifted. They are huge, and knowing I can easily clip one around Beau's neck is SO nice. They're wonderful and worth every penny. I bought two more during Beau's first week at home and will put one in every baby gift I ever give in the future!

Boon grass: If you ever plan on giving your baby a bottle or pumping at all, you need this drying rack. It's one of those things that you probably don't imagine really needing until you actually do, but I LOVE it. There's also a green option, but y'all know I love me some neutrals. :)

KickeePants: the softest, comfiest jammies and onesies.. you can find them at boutiques but I think the cheapest and easiest place is from Amazon.

Nose Frieda: Trust me, you need this. It sounds gross but it's not at all and your baby will have boogers and you just need to get them. Before actually having Beau in front of me I hadn't really processed that boogers would keep your baby from breathing easily.. this is just something that was so awesome to have ready for us to use without even thinking about it.

Any recommendations on things that we should try during his second month?
