Tips for a Fresh 48 Session + Sophie's Session

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

I went back and forth so many times on if we would do a Fresh 48 session. I didn't know if it would be unnecessary with doing newborn photos too, but I loved every Fresh 48 that I saw. Especially already having a baby, I anticipated that I would love having beautiful photos of Beau getting to know Sophie for the first time. My friend Colleen sent me her session from her son who's about a month and a half older than Sophie, and I was convinced. Our photographer, Emi Joy, did a wonderful job and I truly cherish these images.

  • Pick out a robe or pair of pajamas to make you feel put together. I splurged on an amazing pair of Lake pajamas for our session, but honestly I kind of wish I would have worn the other pair of pajamas I wore to the hospital, simply because I feel like the pattern of them was forgiving for my freshly postpartum bloating. But I don't know, even as I type this I really do love the simple look. Just choose something special that you feel beautiful and comfortable in.
  • Beau arrived halfway through the session to join us. Ben's mom brought him and having one more set of hands was SO helpful.
  • Pack your hospital bag with the things you'll want to have for the session all together. I had a gallon size baggie with Sophie's outfit and swaddles and bows for the session, and another one for her coming home outfit.
  • I did the same thing with Beau's outfit.. I put it in a baggie and wrote in sharpie that it was for the Fresh 48. That way whoever's caring for siblings knows exactly what to bring. I also wrote out each item just in case something happened.
  • I ended up having two full happy showers before our session, but friends recommended trying if at all possible to go to the hospital with your hair at least partially styled, and then use dry shampoo and touch up before the session. My nurses letting me shower was the best part of the hospital this go around. :)

  • Full disclosure: upon first looking at this photo I wrote it off because it wasn't super flattering of me.. but now all I see is my sweet husband and beautiful daughter. I think that something to keep in mind is that you're recording the real look at the very first moments after you meet your baby.

  2. How soon after Sophie was born did you actually do your session? Also, was this the very first time Beau met her or had he already been to the hospital? Our little girl is due next month and we have a fresh 48 planned with our photographer so this post was super helpful!

  4. This is so unbelievably precious! My husband and I have toyed around with the idea of having our photographer (one we've used since our engagement, over and over) come for the birth and then take photos similar to these when our little guy comes...this pretty much sealed that for me! I love how they turned out and think that they are definitely different enough from a newborn lifestyle shoot at home to be worth two separate sessions. So sweet!
